Named after the Arve River, of uncertain origin, possibly a Celtic name from Proto-Celtic *garwos (violent, rough, bumpy), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (to bristle). Compare Welsh garw (rough, bumpy) and Irish garbh.
