Etymology

From Middle High German betroc, from Old High German bitrog, derived from Proto-Germanic *drugą. The -u- is from Trug, itself a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German backformation from trüge, from Old High German trugī, from the same Indo-European root.
