Etymology

• (Alphen-Chaam) Potentially attested as boschoue around 1189, attested with certainty as boschoven in 1312-1350. Compound of bos (“rising forest”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”).
• (Bergeijk) First attested as Boshoven in 1772. Compound of bos (“rising forest”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”).
• (Limburg) First attested as Boshusen around 1600. Originally a compound of bos (“rising forest”) and the dative plural form of huis (“house”). The second element was gradually replaced with the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”), possibly by analogy with Hushoven. Formerly an independent hamlet. See also Limburgish Bosseve.
