Etymology

From Buss (kiss) +‎ -erl (-ie). The first element is of onomatopoeic origin; compare Central Franconian Butz (kiss) and similar forms in many languages. See Czech pusa, Serbo-Croatian pusa, maybe related to Proto-Indo-European *bus- (to kiss).
