  • (Noord-Holland) First attested as Leyerthienden van Oudenyerop in 1593. Derived from the plural form of dialectal lei (wet peat bog, swampy flooded land).
  • (Overijssel) Attested as Leijen in 1846. Derived from the plural form of dialectal leije (cultivated land between two drainage canals).
