- (Noord-Holland) First attested as Leyerthienden van Oudenyerop in 1593. Derived from the plural form of dialectal lei (“wet peat bog, swampy flooded land”).
- (Overijssel) Attested as Leijen in 1846. Derived from the plural form of dialectal leije (“cultivated land between two drainage canals”).
