From Latin eremita, from Ancient Greek ἐρημίτης(erēmítēs, person of the desert) from ἐρημία(erēmía, desert, solitude), from ἔρημος(érēmos) or ἐρῆμος(erêmos, uninhabited) plus -ίτης(-ítēs, one connected to, a member of).
