From the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German verb ferian (from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *farjaną), the causative form of faran (from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *faraną). Akin to Dutch veer, English ferry, Danish færge and Swedish färja.
