From Middle High German gebac, from Old High German *gibak, *gibah, from Proto-West Germanic *gabak (something baked, pastry), collective form of *bak, from Proto-Germanic *baką (baked goods, baking). Cognate with Middle Low German gebak (whence German Low German Gebäck), Dutch gebak, Old English ġebæc. More at English batch.
