17th century, from Middle Low German and Middle Dutch gilde. Related to Geld and gelten, ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *geldan (to pay).

Gilde f (genitive Gilde, plural Gilden)

  2. (figurative) Used in the names of certain clubs, e.g. marksmen clubs or carnival clubs.
