Etymology[edit]

Attested as Oudelant in 1573. Derived from heer (lord), Oudeland (a surname) and ambacht (type of fiefdom). Named after Pieter Oudeland, a nobleman from Dordrecht who was one of the financiers of the land reclamation project which created the land the former fiefdom stood on and the current neighbourhood stands on.
