Etymology[edit]

First attested as hellender in 1275-1280. Perhaps derived from Middle Dutch holendere (elder, Sambucus nigra). A compound of Middle Dutch hel (low-lying) and doorn (thorn bush) is also possible. Compare Haalderen and Halder.
