From Old Dutch *thorn, from Proto-Germanic *þurnuz, from Proto-Indo-European *trnus, *tr̥nom < *(s)tern- (sharp stalk or thorn), possibly derived from *ster- (stiff). Compare Low German Doorn, German Dorn, West Frisian toarn, English thorn, Danish torn.
