Etymology

First attested as zwaluwe in 1291. Derived from hoog (high, upper) and the hydronym Zwaluwe, which in turn derives from Proto-Germanic *swel- (swell, bloat). The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Lage Zwaluwe. Compare Swalmen.
