[edit]First attested as de Sualmo at the end of the 12th century. Derived from the dative plural form of the hydronym Swalm, cognate in turn with Middle Dutch swalm (“eddy, whirlpool”), Middle High German swalm (“upwelling of water”). Compare Hooge Zwaluwe and Lage Zwaluwe.
