First attested as zwaluwe in 1291. Derived from laag (“low, lower”) and the hydronym Zwaluwe, which in turn derives from Proto-Germanic *swel- (“swell, bloat”). The element laag was added to distinguish the settlement from Hooge Zwaluwe. Compare Swalmen.
