A younger form of Johanna, ultimately from Latin Iōhanna, a variant of Joanna, from Koine Greek Ἰωάννα (Iōánna), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָה (Yôḥānāh, “Yahweh is gracious”). The Hebrew name is the feminine form corresponding to יְהוֹחָנָן (Yəhōḥānān), the source of Johannes. First attested in the 15th century in Norway.
