From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Japanese 観音 (Kannon かんのん or Kan'on かんおん), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese 觀音 (kwan-ʔim) (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Mandarin Guānyīn 观音), an abbreviation of 觀世音 (kwan-ʃjèj-ʔim "Observer of the world's cries") (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Mandarin Guān-shì-yīn 观世音), from ("observe") + ("world") + ("sounds", "cries"), a translation of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Sanskrit अवलोकितेश्वर (Avalokiteśvara).
