Etymology

A Low and Central German word, from Middle Low German and northern Middle High German klinke (latch), either from Frankish *klinka (latch) or cognate with it through Proto-Germanic *klinkō. Eventually derived from Proto-Germanic *klinganą, probably through the sense “to cling”, alternatively through the sense “to sound” (English clink, German klingen, compare also Klinge (blade)). Cognate with Dutch klink, French clenche.
