German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Low German Köter, from Middle Low German kȫter. Standard use since the 18th century. Further origin uncertain. Perhaps imitative of panting.[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkøːtər/, [ˈkøː.tɐ]
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Köter m (strong, genitive Köters, plural Köter)

  1. (derogatory) dog, pooch
    Synonym: Töle

Usage notes[edit]

  • The pejorative nature of the word depends somewhat on the context. While quite derogatory for a pet dog, it is much less so for a farm dog or watchdog.
