Etymology

lasio- (“hairy”, from Ancient Greek λάσῐος m (lásios)) +‎ gnathus m or f (“jaw”, a New Latin rendering of Ancient Greek γνᾰ́θος f (gnáthos)), literally “hair-jaw; hairy-jawed”, due to this genus of anglerfishes having hair-like barbels which grow on their jaws.

Usage notes

• The genus's gender is not fixed. As the original root of the name, Ancient Greek γνᾰ́θος (gnáthos), was a feminine noun, it can be interpreted as a feminine noun; however, because it shares a common masculine Latin suffix of -us, it is also interpreted as a masculine noun.
