Etymology
Via early modern (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch loterye, which is derived from the cognate of German Los (“lot”). The word originates from the bilingual contact zones of Flanders and may be a Frenchified form of earlier lotinghe (German Losung). Compare contemporary Dutch loterij, French loterie.
