Etymology[edit]

Via early modern Dutch from Middle Dutch loterye, which is derived from the cognate of German Los ‎(lot). The word originates from the bilingual contact zones of Flanders and may be a Frenchified form of earlier lotinghe (German Losung). Compare contemporary Dutch loterij, French loterie.
