Etymology

[edit]

16th century, borrowed along the Lower Rhine from Dutch loterye, lottrie (modern loterij), from Middle Dutch loterye (mid-15th c.), derived from lot, which is related with German Los. The Dutch word originated from the bilingual contact zones of Flanders and may be a Frenchified form of earlier Middle Dutch lotinghe (German Losung). Compare French loterie (16th c.).
