From Yiddish מענדעלסאָן (mendelson), literally son of Mendel, Yiddish diminutive of Hebrew מְנַחֵם (m'nachém), a male given name meaning the consoler or the comforter, from ניחם (to comfort, console, to be comforted, consoled).
