Etymology[edit]

First attested as millingi in 721-722. Derived from Old Dutch Milo (a personal name) or Millo (a personal name) with collectivising suffix -ing-. No etymological relationship with Latin milia (mile). The element aan de Rijn ("on the Rhine") was added later.
