Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Oesmehorne and Oestmehorne in 1543. Compound of an otherwise unknown toponym *Oostum (derived in turn from Old Frisian āst (east-, eastern) and hēm (home, settlement)) and hern (corner of a levee). The Dutch version of the toponym derives from a superseded Frisian name; the current Frisian toponym refers to a former sconce.
