Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as Oesmehorne and Oestmehorne in 1543. Compound of an otherwise unknown toponym *Oostum (derived in turn from Old Frisian āst (“east-, eastern”) and hēm (“home, settlement”)) and hern (“corner of a levee”). The Dutch version of the toponym derives from a superseded Frisian name; the current Frisian toponym refers to a former sconce.
