Etymology[edit]
First attested as nienthorp around the end of the 11th century. Derived from Middle Dutch out (“old”) and a compound of nie (“new”) and dorp (“village, secondary settlement”). The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuwe Niedorp.
