Etymology[edit]

First attested as Oester Nyegae in 1505. Borrowed from West Frisian Ousternijegea, derived from the toponym Ouwer (derived in turn from Old Frisian ower (bank, strip of land next to a watercourse)) and a compound of (new) and (village, village area).
