Etymology

First attested as Pekel A, Pekell Ae and Pekel Ae in 1566. Named after a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of the toponym Pekel (potentially connected to Middle Low German peke (swamp reed, rush)) and aa (watercourse, river). The hydronym gave its name to a large peat extraction settlement which fragmented into several villages with the passage of time.
