Etymology[edit]

With irregular shortening of the stem vowel from Middle High German rüezel, from Old High German *ruozil, derived from the verb Old High German ruozan (to grub, root), from Proto-Germanic *wrōtaną, whence also Dutch wroeten (to grub) and English root.
