From Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeydʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian geĩsti (desire), Latvian gàidît (wait), Old Prussian gēide (they are waiting), Old High German gīt (avarice).
