Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *žьdati(to wait, to await), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰidʰ-. Compare Old High German gīt(avarice) and Old Prussian gēide(they are waiting). [1].
