Etymology
[edit]From в- (v-, “in”) + ме́сто (mésto, “place”). Originated in the early 17th century, where it can be seen in legal documents as a change from в (v) + genitive noun + ме́сто (mésto) ("in [something's] place") to вме́сто (vmésto) + genitive noun ("instead [of something]").
