[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic поити (poiti), from Proto-Slavic *pojьti. By surface analysis, по- (po-) + ити́ (ití). Compare Russian пойти́ (pojtí), Old Novgorodian поити (poiti).

Usage notes
[edit]- The imperfective verb идти́ (idtí) with corresponding perfective пойти́ (pojtí) is a unidirectional verb. Its multidirectional counterpart is ходи́ть (xodítʹ).
- Пойти has a special first-person plural imperative form, пойдёмте (pojdjómte), which carries a hortative meaning comparable to дава́йте пойдём (davájte pojdjóm, “let's go”).
