From Proto-Indo-European *modʰros (blue) (compare Hittite *𒀭𒋫𒊏𒀸 (antaraš, blue), accusative 𒀭𒋫𒊏𒀭 (antaran)), probably from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (to be wet, to drip, grease).
