From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēˀstei, from Proto-Indo-European *sed- by Lua error in Module:parameters at line 348: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "Winter's law" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E..

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian sė́sti, 3sg. sė́da, Old Prussian sindants (sitting).

Indo-European cognates include Latin sedeō, Ancient Greek ἕζομαι (hézomai, to sit down), Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (sitan), English sit.
