From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewdʰ- (to cover, encase), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (to hide, wrap up, conceal). Cognate with Welsh cuddio (hide), Latin cū̆stōs (guard, protector), Ancient Greek κεύθω (keúthō, to conceal).
