Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewdʰ- (“to cover, encase”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to hide, wrap up, conceal”). Cognate with Welsh cuddio (“hide”), Latin cū̆stōs (“guard, protector”), Ancient Greek κεύθω (keúthō, “to conceal”).
