    From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷálos (large fish, sheatfish). Compare Latin squalus, Old Prussian kalis, Ancient Greek ἀσπαλιεύς (aspalieús, fisherman), Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬭𐬀 (kara, kind of fish).[1]
