Etymology 1[edit]

Probably originally *skerdaną, from Pre-Germanic *skerdʰ-, with the final consonant influenced by the iterative. Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut off); see the derivative *skurtaz (short).[1]
