@Tom 144: Hittite and Tocharian do not preserve this specific formation. Only Balto-Slavic, Germanic and Italic do, and they do not show any trace of the alveolar stop. Therefore, and because of the parallel case of 'hundred', it is plausible that the initial stop was already dropped in PIE in three-consonant initial clusters of this type – alveolar stop, velar stop and another consonant such as *m (even if syllabic). (Or maybe it was only dropped in four-consonant initial clusters, but again, even if the third consonant was syllabic; then it would initially only have been dropped in the weak cases. There were even five-consonant clusters of the type *dʰǵʰmn̥C- in this paradigm.) Of course, in the 'earth' word, the alveolar stop was preserved at least in the strong cases; but in the weak cases it might well have been dropped too, as we note at *dʰéǵʰōm. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 22:52, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
