Etymology[edit]

First attested as rogle in 1230. Of uncertain etymology. Potentially a compound of ruig (rough, wild), rogge (rye, Secale cereale) or dialectal roek (rook, Corvus frugilegus) and lo (light forest). Compare the English toponym Rayleigh.
