Borrowed from Latin Scandināvia, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *Skaþinawjō (“Scadia island”) (compare Old English Scedenig, Old Norse Skáney 'southern tip of Sweden'), from *-aujo 'island' (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English ī(e)g 'island', Old Norse ey 'island').
