Etymology

[edit]

Potentially attested as scharnum in 1200, attested with certainty as scharnum in 1347. Potentially derived from a compound of skarne (manure, dungheap) and Old Frisian hēm (home, settlement) and a compound of Golda (a personal name) or gold (gold) and hēm (home, settlement). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
