New Latin, from Ancient Greek σχιστός (skhistós, “cloven, divided”) + σῶμα (sôma, “body”), from σχίζω (skhízō, “to split, to cleave”) + -τος (-tos, “able to”), referring to the gynecophoric canal on the dorsal surface of the adult male.
