Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German senkel (net weighed down with lead balls, anchor, lace), from Old High German senkil (anchor, cast net), from an extension of senken with nominalizing suffix -ila, originally meaning "device that one lets sink down"; see Stachel for an analogous noun formation.
