From Middle High German stīc, from Old High German stīg, from Proto-Germanic *stīgaz (path), related to German steigen. Cognate with Old English stīġ ("path; footpath; narrow way"; cf. <span class="deprecated" title="Template:etyl is no longer in use. See WT:ETYM.">(deprecated template usage) [etyl] English sty (ladder)), Danish sti, Norwegian Bokmål sti.
