Pronunciation

Etymology

Borrowed from French syrah. The derivation from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Persian city name of Shiraz (شیراز) is today believed to be a legend. The same goes for derivations from Syria, Syracuse or the Greek island of Syros. The name might be connected to the Proto-Celtic root ser “mountain range” (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Portuguese serra, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Spanish sierra).
