Is it possible to divide this word like this - ծաղ-իկ? --Abkhazian1 (talk) 12:16, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Abkhazian1, the ending could be the suffix -իկ (-ik), especially since the word is inflected like an n-type, like others suffixed with -իկ (-ik). But no root *ծաղ (*cał) is known (although some have identified it with the root of ծաղր (całr)). Until the word is etymologized, we cannot know the nature of -իկ (-ik). --Vahag (talk) 13:26, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Vahagn Petrosyan, Thank you! As always, you are good. Some more questions: 1) in Armenian are there any other phytonyms with this -իկ suffix? 2) What is n-type ? 3) Georgian წალკოტი - seems that it can be divided like წალკ-ოტ-ი. Any suggestions for Armenian origin of this -ოტ-? --Abkhazian1 (talk) 07:07, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Abkhazian1. 1) Yes. See the index of Armenian plant names. Many are with -իկ (-ik). -ուկ (-uk) is even more common. 2) It is a declension type. Nominative ծաղիկ (całik), genitive ծաղկ-ա-ն (całk-a-n). 3) Perhaps -ուտ (-ut, abounding in), especially common with plant names and describing places full of plants. Compare ծաղկուտ (całkut, abounding in flowers), ծաղկուտ վայրք (całkut vayrkʻ, flowery places). For the Armenian u ~ Georgian o, one may compare մածուն (macun) > მაწონი (mac̣oni). But this is a guess, and should not be added to the mainspace. --Vahag (talk) 08:44, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
