Rfv-sense The distinction made between use with or without a qualifying word does not seem valid; qualifying words such as "well," "ill" etc. are used when the word has the sense of "be appropriate" (see for example the 1643 citation). On the other hand, a fairly extensive search has not yielded any credible examples of the sense "appear, seem, look." It would be helpful to provide citations in support of this sense. I would therefore propose removing the parentheses "(with some qualifying word)" and "(without qualifying word)" and adding relevant citations for the sense "appear, seem, look." This was quite the challenge (!), but I did manage to find three quotes that support the sense of "To appear, seem, look" more than "To be appropriate or creditable". This is now cited. Kiwima (talk) 21:47, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant! Thanks so much for all your work! I'm not sure how this works: should I be removing the rfv now? Aabull2016 (talk) 00:21, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

YW. From the rules at the top of this page, you can remove the rfv tomorrow, and mark this entry as having passed. It sits that way for another week, and if there are no objections, then this gets archived. Kiwima (talk) 20:38, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Passed (or withdrawn). Good work finding the Spenser and Waterbury citations, which seem (beseem?) particularly clear. - -sche (discuss) 19:37, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
