Is this a definition of dead? I don't feel like dead as this connotation so much as the whole phrase he is dead to me implies a desire to ignore that person ("he"), but unless my experience is misguiding me, it doesn't necessarily mean hatred. Mglovesfun (talk) 20:26, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

I think it's inaccurate. It means "as far as I'm concerned, he is (or might as well be) dead", i.e. gone, not available to speak to, etc. Having said that, there is the implication that the person has chosen to ignore them deliberately. Equinox ◑ 20:36, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

I've just removed the "I will think of you as dead" citation (Rob Roy) because that does literally mean dead, and not "I will think of you as absolutely hated by me". Equinox ◑ 16:52, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

It's in a grey area, IMO; I mean, people do use the word like that, but other dictionaries don't seem to regard it as a separate sense, and it is possible to view it as the sense 1 + hyperbole. I wonder whether both 'absolutely ignored' and 'marked for death' ("you ate my lunch? oh, you're dead, mister!") should be "by extension" subsenses of the "no longer living sense". Btw, our one citation of the "(hyperbolic) Figuratively, not alive; lacking life." sense, where the "figurative" should be moved into the label, does not really seem to use that sense...? But the sense itself, as written, does seem to exist, and other dictionaries have one like it, for when people describe rocks (etc) as "dead" even if they were never alive to begin with. - -sche (discuss) 18:38, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
