1549, Erasmus, “(please specify the book of the Bible, or other title)”, in Nicolas Udall [i.e., Nicholas Udall; et al.], transl., The Paraphrase of Erasmus vpon the Newe Testamente, London: [] Edwarde Whitchurche:

Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Erasmus's work The Paraphrase of Erasmus vpon the Newe Testamente (1st edition, 1549, 2 tomes) translated by Edmund Allen, Myles Coverdale, John Old, and Nicholas Udall. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

  • Tome 1.
  • Tome 2this is an imperfect copy due to the bleed-through of ink and faint printing on multiple folios which obscures the text; replace it with a better copy if one becomes available.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1=, |tome=, or |volume=mandatory: the tome or volume number quoted from in Arabic numerals, either |tome=1 or |tome=2.
  • |title= – if quoting from one of the titles indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:

  • |chapter=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from a paraphrase of one of the books of the Bible, use this parameter to specify the chapter quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals. If quoting from a prologue, specify |chapter=Prologue.
  • |3= or |folio=, and |verso=mandatory in some cases: the work is numbered by folios rather than page numbers. The folio number is indicated on the top right corner of each recto (right-hand) page. Use |folio= to indicate the folio number in lowercase Roman numerals, and if quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1 or |verso=yes; if |verso= is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted. If quoting a range of folios, for example, "folios x, verso – xi, recto", note the following:
    • Use |folio= and |verso= to specify the folio at the start of the range, and |folioend= and |versoend= (if required) to specify the folio at the end of the range.
    • In addition, if the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears) is the one indicated using |folioend=, use |folioref= and |versoref= to indicate the page to be linked to. (If quoting a recto page, omit |versoend= and |versoref=.)
These parameters must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • As the folio number starts from i in various places, |book= must be specified for the template to link correctly to the online version of the work.
  • Tome 1:
  • Tome 2:
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the work.
  • |5=, |t=, or |translation= – a translation of the passage quoted into modern English.
  • |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
